Grand Marias Day Trip
Visit the quaint village of Grand Marais, located 18 miles from your lodging, with its harbor, lighthouse, museum, galleries and shops . Many artists make their home in the area and you’ll find their pieces displayed in a variety of shops. The town has an unusual number of interesting dining options for its size….from sophisticated culinary menus to simple locally-caught fish. Grand Marais is also the home of the North House Folk School which offers year-round classes in traditional northern crafts. You can learn to make mukluks, carve a wood paddle, learn bread-baking, build a traditional kayak from scratch and much more. The North House Folk School is open to the public to drop by and gives weekly tours.
A Day in the Lutsen Area
Spend the day exploring the Lutsen area! While you can’t “do Lutsen” in a day, we’ve got an idea of what our “perfect day” is. Head to nearby Lutsen Mountains where you can ride a gondola to the top of Moose Mountain for some spectacular views. Take a thrilling ride on the Alpine slide. Tofte Day Tour
Tofte, about 7 miles from the resort, offers a little bit of everything. Bring your own bike or rent one and ride the paved Gitchi-Gami bike trail, hike up to Carlton Peak, stop at the Fishing Museum or Historic Center or explore a nature center. Gunflint Trail Sampler
The Gunflint Trail is loaded with scenery and history! The drive takes you through a forest in various stages of regeneration after recent wildfires and ends at the Boundary Water Canoe Area. Stop at historic Gunflint Lodge for a bite to eat before or after viewing the fascinating, new Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center. By July, Gunflint Lodge should have their adventurous “Canopy Tour” complete. Watch for moose along the way….the “Trail” is notorious for moose sightings. Historic Grand Portage
This day trip includes a short hike to the highest waterfall in Minnesota, right on the Canadian border, a visit to a historic fur trading fort and the Grand Portage Ojibwe or Anishinabe Heritage Center.
