Hiking Trails

BEGINNER HIKES

Temperance River Cauldron Walk: This slow climb along the river takes you past waterfalls and deep river cauldrons. Be sure to cross the highway and explore the catwalk, bridge, and riverside trails down to Lake Superior. Park in the pull-outs on Highway 61.

  • 1/4 mile to 5 mile round trips.
  • 10 minutes south of Lutsen Resort on Hwy 61. Park in the pull-outs along the highway.

Cascade River Walk: The Cascade River with its several waterfalls is 10 miles north of Lutsen on Highway 61. The park has a developed network of trails in the area ranging from 10-minute hikes to several hours.

  • 1/4 mile to 7 mile round trips.
  • 10 minutes north of Lutsen Resort on Hwy 61. Park in the pull-outs along the highway.

Cascade Shoreline Trail: A scenic lakeside trail leading you near the rock outcroppings and crashing waves of Lake Superior. This is a great hike in the spring when others farther from the lake are still iced over.

  • Up to 3 miles round trip
  • Parking is the same as the Cascade River Walk. This trail starts on the north side of the Hwy 61 bridge on the lake side.

Sugarloaf Cove Interpretive Trail: This loop trail brings you to a variety of ecosystems with historical information all along the trail. Don’t forget an interpretive booklet near the signs in the parking lot. This is an extremely family friendly trail

  • A 1 mile loop trail
  • 15 miles south of Lutsen Resort on Hwy 61, between mile-marker 73 & 74.

Oberg Mountain Loop: This hike takes you on a loop around the top of the mountain offering spectacular views in all directions.

  • A 2.5 mile loop trail.
  • Parking is located 2.1 miles up FR 336 (Onion River Road).

INTERMEDIATE HIKES

Britton Peak: This steep trail leads to great views of Lake Superior, Carlton Peak, the Temperance River Valley, and parts of the Sawtooth Mountain Range.

  • 1/2 mile round trip on a very steep trail.
  • Parking can be found 2.6 miles up the Sawbill Trail.

White Sky Rock: A steady uphill climb leads to a beautiful cliff edge and overlooks Caribou Lake and surrounding forest.

  • 2/3 mile round trip on a steep trail.
  • The trail is located 4 miles up the Caribou Trail. Look for parking on the right side of the road.

Carlton Peak: A beautiful climb to the top of Carlton Peak that ends in a spectacular view of Lake Superior and surrounding area.

  • A 3 mile round trip.
  • Parking can be found 2.6 miles up the Sawbill Trail at the Britton Peak trailhead.

Leveaux Mountain: This hike offers a beautiful wooded climb to the overlook on top of the mountain.

  • A 3.5 mile round trip.
  • Parking is located 2.1 miles up FR 336 (Onion River Road).

ADVANCED HIKES

Eagle Mountain: Hike to the highest point in Minnesota at 2,301 feet. Well maintained trail passes through meandering beaver ponds, pristine boundary waters lakes and awards fantastic views from the top. Follow directions for a self-issuing permit at the trailhead - no charge.

  • 7 miles round trip.
  • Take the Caribou Trail inland, turn right at T on 170 (The Grade) follow to Eagle Mountain parking area – clearly marked.

Caribou Trail to Lutsen Ski Area: A one-way hike on the Superior Hiking Trail (drop a car off at one end and start at the other) with diverse forest types including maple, birch, and pine. Trail parallels Poplar River, passes Lake Agnes and provides beautiful vistas.

  • 6.4 miles one-way.
  • Starts 4 miles up the Caribou Trail. Look for parking on the right side of the highway. Trail ends at Lutsen Mountains Ski Area.

The Gondola Hike: Take the ski area gondola to the top of Moose Mountain and hike the Superior Hiking Trail back to the parking lot. Steep descents and ascents.

  • 3.5 miles one-way.
  • Park near the gondola 1.5 miles up Ski Hill Road.
