Lutsen Resort's Innovative Wine List Garners Wine Spectator's 2008 Award of Excellence

LUTSEN, MN—Known for its beautiful lakeside setting on the rugged North Shore of Lake Superior and its award-winning hospitality, Lutsen Resort recently added another distinction - Wine Spectator's 2008 Award of Excellence (link to listing here). Every year, Wine Spectator awards restaurants whose wine list "offers interesting selections, is appropriate to their cuisine and appeals to a wide range of wine lovers." This year, Lutsen Resort's unique menu and wine pairings landed it on Wine Spectator's list for the very first time.

A menu with an extensive list of the world's most popular beverage results in Lutsen Resort's most recent designation.

Robert McPherson, the wine director at Lutsen Resort's restaurant, notes that the growth of their wine list coincides with the rise in popularity of wine nationwide. "Wine is the one beverage that continues to grow in popularity, outpacing even beer," he said. Working collectively with executive chef Rob Wells and food and beverage manager Mark Lindsay, McPherson strives to offer wines that complement the resort's Scandinavian/American menu.

"The key to a truly great wine list is to offer something for everyone," said McPherson. "For the novice who wants a nice chardonnay to go with her walleye, to the vinophile really looking for a great wine experience, my goal is to offer a wealth of selections that intrigue and delight."

Wine Spectator judges restaurants based on their wine list, menu, and a brief description of their overall restaurant concept. Nancy Burns, owner of Lutsen Resort, said, "In everything we do at Lutsen Resort, we attempt to blend our strong sense of identity with a progressive look to what trends and experiences are coming next. Our menu and wine selection are no exception. It's nice to be noticed for something we're so passionate about."
