With a diverse mix of hardwoods, softwoods and ground cover, 'Mother Nature's Fireworks Display' is emerging (photo to right just taken yesterday) on the North Shore of Lake Superior, and forestry experts predict it should continue well into October. Lutsen Resort's ideal location at the crossroads of the North Shore's vast forests provides a great starting point for fall colors excursions Diane Loh general manager at Lutsen Resort, who oversees the extensive offering of fall colors activities at Lutsen Resort said "The unique mix of trees that you encounter as you move inland creates a really stunning mix of color. The maple trees are moving into their brilliant oranges, the aspens are bright yellow, and the bushes on the ground are turning deep red. It truly is something to see." To that end, Diane suggests several ways to view the fall colors around Lutsen. "The Forestry Service designates special routes for optimum viewing, and we try to provide a local take on what spots are a must see at any given time -- we're marking up maps all of the time," she said. "We also organize hikes for our guests who want to really get out and experience the beauty of autumn up close; the smell of the woods in the fall is just incredible." She added, "For the more adventurous sorts we offer sea kayaking excursions that provide a panoramic perspective from the lake that is outstanding." In addition to the tours and hikes, Loh recommends the famous gondola at Lutsen Mountains (photo at right shows peak season in past year), a trip that gets riders up above the trees for an unmatched view of the surrounding forests. "It's a quiet ride that will take your breath away," she said. |
