Lake Superior, an inland sea, with its rugged shoreline offers sea kayakers a paddler's paradise. The Lake Superior Water Trailpasses by the Lutsen Resort beach. The MN DNR offers maps of the water trail.
The water of Lake Superior is a hybrid of a lake and a sea. It offers features of both and it's common to have extremely cold water and very large waves. Expect waves shoulder high or above head on many days. Before venturing out on the big lake, prepare yourself by knowing rescues and by wearing immersion gear. We recommend hiring a local guide if you are not a skilled, experienced paddler.
