It reaches from Crane Lake in the Voyageurs National Park to the Pigeon River, which empties to Lake Superior. With over one million acres and over 1,000 lakes, it ranks as the second largest area within the United States' National Wilderness Preservation system. It is one of two nationally designated canoe wilderness areas and attracts over 200,000 visitors a year. Several nearby entry points offer access to this wilderness preserve. For daytrips, visit Sawbill Outfitters, a short 30 minutes away, and they'll provide you a rental canoe and equipment. From their put-in, the Kelso canoe route offers a sampling of the wonders of the BWCA. For other rental options, consider picking up a canoe at Sawtooth Outfitters in Tofte. Then drive to one of the nearby entry points, like Brule or Homer Lake, which although only a few miles apart, offer either a big lake or a small lake experience, respectively. |
